"So Bradley, it sounds like you're having a top time?"
"Top is the understatement of the year", he replied. "Wicked, awesome and amazing are better words", he said firmly.
Bradley phoned in this evening's report, after a day spent gorge walking and orienteering. The walkers were equipped with waterproof jackets and trousers that were apparently twice as big as the wearers, as well as helmets and buoyancy aids. They crossed numerous streams and walked under a massive waterfall, then climbed to the top of another, where they walked along a ledge along the top.
They returned to the centre, where chilli and rice, followed by banana custard disappeared within minutes.
This evening they worked in pairs to carry out an orienteering exercise around the grounds in the centre - this involved a lot of running to collect markers.

Last night, everyone played games after tea.

Everyone enjoyed a good night's sleep, but were up in time for a breakfast - lots of toast and cereal.
The children have been divided into three groups: Group 1 went caving, Group 2 went gorge-walking and Group 3 had a day at the centre enjoying the zip wire and assault course.
This is Ella's account of caving.
'We were dressed in huge, padded all-in-one suits, with big boots and helmets with lamps. At first the cave seemed scary and dark - and damp - but it was fine when we got used to it. We had to work as a team to get around one big rock, then we studied the stalactites and stalagmites. We had to walk and bend double to get through a small tunnel and then squeeze through the "Letterbox" - a very narrow gap. Luckily, everyone made it through. Next was the "washing machine". a series of progressively higher streams with fast-flowing water that churns up. To get through, you have to hold on to the slimey wall. I really enjoyed it and had a great time.' |

Class 4 arrived safely in Longtown at 12.15 after an early stop for lunch at 10.45 on the M5. After unpacking and wrestling with their duvet covers to make their beds, they had a tour of the centre, where they were shown all the activities on offer. By teatime, everyone was starving, so the home-made burgers, chips and beans were very welcome and set them all up for an evening 'stroll' up the mountain. Half way up, Luke F. announced that he had never, ever wanted his bed quite so much as now, but the feeling of achievement when they reached the top was huge. George said he felt so high up that he felt he could touch God!
Tomorrow, the children will be in their groups to tackle gorge walking, abseiling and other activities.
